Half Marathon Finish

Running Accomplishments:

There isn't a lot to say about my running. I have been running off and on for 5 years and I want to get better and test my limits. I am pretty much starting from scratch.

Short-Term Running Goals:

I want to complete the Moab 1/2 Marathon in October and to be able to be comfortable running.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Maybe someday a whole marathon would be amazing! :)

Personal:

I am a student at Utah State University and I came home from an LDS mission in December 2007.  I think if I can do that, I can complete a 1/2 marathon.

I have been running off and on for the last month or so, just a couple miles a few times a week. Earlier this year I had been training for a 1/2 marathon and got to about 8 miles for a long run.  I felt out of shape today though. I am motivated to get going though :)

I ran 2 miles and it really felt like a marathon to me! My throat burned by the first half mile.

Keep up the training! Sounds like you're having a similar experience to what I had when I first got into running. Be patient but dedicated and consistent, and you'll achieve your goals. And, yes, you most definitely can do a half marathon...and more. Just tell yourself you can, and then train for it, and you'll get there. Once you've completed one or two races, you catch "the bug" for running, and then you'll start working for better PRs. Good luck.

This run started on a slight incline and I felt like I would have to walk, but by the end I felt good and like I could keep on going.

I walked in between a bit, and I felt like I needed to stop a lot, then I would stop and felt like I could run! I felt myself getting a little impatient, but I was proud by the end that I did it. Plus at the end I went to the top on a huge hill will stairs.  That felt good to be able to do at the end of a long run for me.

I did cross training today-elliptical machine for 35 mins and stair climber for 10.  I strength trained well and felt good. I also went dancing at night if that counts!

Welcome to the blog. Have you ever thought of running the Top of Utah half

From walter on Fri, Aug 08, 2008 at 09:42:27

Hey another Loganite! Very nice, my wife is from Lewiston, Utah. Where did you go on your mission? I agree with Mattrow, you should sign up for the Top of Utah half and then do Moab competitively. Welcome to the blog.

Welcome to the blog! There are a few of us on the Blog that live in Logan. Let us know if you want to hook up for a run. Your best bet would be with Bethany and Marci.

I played tennis for 1.5 hours today as a cross training exercise.  I am trying to just keep myself busy most days with doing something. Even if it isn't running. I signed up for a 5k race on September 6th and paid the fee so I can't get out of it. I am excited about it actually! I used to get scared and nervous!

This morning I ran 2.5 miles and since I missed my long run this weekend, I was definitely feeling it! I thought death was around the corner.

Camilla:

I would suggest the following training. Run Mon-Sat 4 miles a day, no skipping, no excuses, no exceptions. The day does not end until the miles are in barring sickness, injury, or a severe natural disaster that locks you up completely immobilized. Easy pace, should be conversational all the way. Should feel like you could go at least another 4 miles if you had to when you finish, that easy. The right pace will probably feel dog slow at least in the first couple of miles, do not worry about it. Do that for a couple of weeks, lets see how you handle it.

Also, sign up for a 5 K to test your fitness. Don't know if you realized that the half you are planning to run in October is on Sunday. For an alternative I would suggest Painter's Half in St. George in January or Huntsville Half in September. Spanish Fork Half is on the same day, but would be a longer drive. But if you happen to be in the area it is an option as well.

Hi Camilla! You're killin' me! Too funny. I can't tell you how many times I've felt the same way. In fact, I generally find the first couple of miles the hardest anyway, and then I find the rhythm and start to roll.

As for the "Nymans," the name really sounds familiar, but I can't say that I know them. We live in the "Windsor Park" area, about 1/2 mile north of the AF / Highland border near what used to be "Tri City Golf Course" (but it is now "Fox Hollow" - I guess someone thought the new name would sound somehow more prestigious).

Go Aggies! I'm a Cougar myself, but I love Utah State and the Logan / Cache Valley area. Absolutely one of my favorite places in Utah.

Keep running!

SASHA! Today was for you baby! I ran 4 miles at an easy pace and it felt great! I definitely felt more into things today even though I didn't run Tuesday.

Also, I needed new front disc brakes and I did them myself!! That's right, a girl did her own brakes and rotors!

Today was a great day!

I ran an easy 4 miles today and actually felt like I could keep running! It was very windy but it felt pretty good. My knees hurt a little bit at the end, but they are fine. Keeping an easy pace has helped me remember that I am only in competition with myself and that I should just try my best.

I ran four easy miles again today just like Sasha said, and tomorrow will probably be the same. It was pretty nice weather but I ate a lot of sugar this weekend that was coming back to haunt me! I will have to watch it on the weekends, especially being in college!

Oh, I know what you mean about watching those sugars! Good job getting out there and running your 4 miles! It feels good, doesn't it?

Hey, I just read your personal section, and wanted to add, good job for serving a mission! I got married a little young (20), but if I hadn't, I would have loved to have gone too. :o)

I decided to extend my run a bit today and ran 5 miles instead of 4, staying at an easy pace. It hurt my stomach a bit to run that far, but it was a personal victory for me to run that far :) By the middle of the run, I didn't much notice I was running except to keep a decent pace. I love it when I am running and I can forget about the world and just focus on the road and when I need to get to. It is a lot like life, you can't abandon what you are doing and the only option is stick it out.  You realize your true potential that way.

Good run! You had me confused on camille's blog, I thought you were camille and couldnt figure out how you lived in AZ and Logan at the same time. It was late when I saw your blog. Im coming up to do the half this weekend. I love that race. TOU Half is one of the best sponsored races in this nation in my opinion. Al's gave away at least 4000 dollars worth of merchandise at last years race and Icon gave a 2000 dollar treadmill, and other sponsors kicked in a bunch of stuff. I saw Ipods, Gps watches, Sunglasses(which I won last year) and the treadmill and other great stuff.

Good training this week so far. Last week was decent, but with a couple of problems. You skipped Thursday and Saturday. That should not happen. The magic of training is not in being a hero once in a while, but in putting in a very doable modest effort 6 days a week without skipping. A runner training 6 days a week competing against a runner training only 4 days a week is like a boxer in a match against someone a couple of weight divisions lighter.

Even if you feel like you can run 5 miles, err on the safe side. Keep doing 4 6 days a week until you are 100% sure your body can handle it.

Be careful with the diet and sleep. Your ability to handle the training load is directly related to both. You will have to find the strength to be different from your peers in those two areas.

Today was a great day! I haven't really even been trying to run fast or anything and in the last 2 weeks I have cut my time for a 5k to 36 mins! I know that sounds dumb to some people but I don't care! I have cut almost 10 mins off my time and I am excited! So, I ran well today and 4 miles doesn't seem so hard anymore, which is great! Also, I ran one of my miles completely up a treacherous hill, so that made me feel good too.

Wow. Today was not my best day running. I had abdominal pain most of the time I was running and I definitely didn't have my best time ever. I ran a moderate 4 miles and by the end I was glad it was over!

Well today wasn't bad at all. I am getting used to running that distance every time. I didn't run over the weekend but I decided to run in the mornings now that school started so that I will get it done early and not have to worry about it! I did 4 miles and at a medium pace. 1 mile of a really hard hill and the rest flat.

From Camille on Mon, Aug 25, 2008 at 13:46:56

You did 1.5 miles more than me... I noticed that you barely beat me last week for who had more miles... and you are already off to a better start. I better pick it up. (totally joking, of course!) Good job today! And good luck with school.

From walter on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 07:29:20

Thats a good attitude you have camilla. When I first started running my goal was to just not stop and when I found I could do that then I concentrated on getting faster each race. Its that attitude in marathons that helps you finish and I always think this in races that the person around me is going through the same thing and its not just me. Keep up the good work.

I ran another 5k today just to see where I was with my time and I cut another 5 mins off my time!! I am running a flat 31 mins! I actually feel like my hard work and running is paying off finally! I only really had time this morning to run a 5k too so it was an unplanned surprise for me.

Also, I totally replaced my own serpentine belt on my car and I felt manly haha

Congrats for cutting 5 mins off your time. That's awesome. I need to do that. I feel like my pace is getting longer, not shorter. :o(

Also, good job on changing the serpentine belt!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 14:59:23

That is an improvement. However, no need to test yourself or push yourself that frequently. Learn to be patient. I've said this before, but it needs repeating - moderate effort consistency 6 days a week without skipping beats a 4-day-a-week workout hero. Stop skipping days. At the very least if the day is too busy you can set your alarm clock 10 minutes earlier than normal, and run a mile before your day starts. 1 > 0. However, in 23 years of running I've never managed to pack my day to the point of not being able to run at least 5 miles, and I've had reasons to be busy - my wife and I went through school supporting ourselves 100%, no loans, just job income. Overtime the number of our children got up to 5, and I have been the sole provider.

So perhaps it is time to do some schedule de-cluttering.

At this point running up a hill is not a good idea - too much effort. Stay flat.

I didn't run yesterday and I have been so tired this week since school started and I have been working 45 hours per week too. I ran this morning and it was kinda grueling but by the end I wanted to keep going but I didn't have enough time. I think tomorrow I will get up earlier to run farther. :)

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 13:12:17

4 miles is plenty. Do not go farther. Focus on not skipping days instead. If you've skipped a day, the train is gone. Do not try to make up the next day, just start over. Examine the list of Top Ten Training Mistakes (link at the top of this page), and make sure to not repeat them.

From Camille on Thu, Aug 28, 2008 at 14:46:42

Camilla - it sounds like you need an "all about Camilla" day. I understand feeling overwhelmed like that. I graduated in 2006, so I still remember how exhausting it is to balance school, work, and homework. Keep going! I think the #1 thing I learned from school is that you can truly do *anything*.

Good job on the 4 miles!

4 miles that killed me because I'm a dork and didn't run over the weekend at all! Ah! I think I am getting a little bored with the 4 miles per day and I want to do something that is more or just different and an addition to what I am currently running. Plus, not so smart that I didn't run the weekend before a 5k I will be running this weekend in SLC! Lesson learned.

From Camille on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 00:17:23

Are you doing a race this weekend? I know Sasha says to run every day... so don't tattle on me, but I find that if I run *every* day, I get burnt out. So I alternate running and riding my bike 6 days a week. I run Monday, Wednesdays, and a long run on Saturday. All the other days I try to bike. If I don't bike (because of weather or something), I do kickboxing. It keeps me feeling good and I think cross training is good because it gets you to work your muscles in a different way. Just a thought!

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 21:00:24

When you choose to run less in training, you also choose to run slower in a race. Never mind boredom. It does not prevent aerobic development. If you want to well you need to learn how to make running fun, or just plain power through the boredom.

From Camille on Fri, Sep 05, 2008 at 21:11:55

Camilla,

Are you ready for your race? We haven't heard anything from you since Tuesday. Are you okay?

I didn't run a whole lot this week. It was just a difficult week...But I still ran the Wasatch Women's 5k in SLC this morning and I came in the top 40 and had a time of 32:12! So I feel pretty good about that. Next week I will get back on the horse.
